ARC + CFF 2019: Featured Exhibiting Artist in Residence

It’s that most wonderful time of year again as we prepare for the Chattanooga Film Festival! Our residency was such a fun success last year we’ve brought it back in full force to support local artists as well as highlight one Featured Exhibiting Artist. We are excited to announce the selected artist for this special short term residency:

CARINA PEARSON

2019 FEATURED EXHIBITING ARTIST

Pearson will be completing a new series of abstract paintings and portraits of women, depicting the female imagination. These new works “reflect the inner landscapes of women as an invisible kingdom- a place of freedom and power that women have used as sanctuary.”

Artist Statement:

“Someone recently said to me, "chasing your greatest excitements is channeling God." Painting for me is just another way to chase what makes me feel alive. I'm trying to excite myself as much as possible as I'm painting and trying to give whoever sees the painting a little jolt - a jolt of truth, a jolt of weird, or a jolt of delight... I adore children's art because their pictures are so violently alive. There's a pulse there. It's not simply innocence but something more, something otherworldly even. I also like to use symbols in the pictures, namely eyes, hands, keys, birds, and doors, which reference identity, agency, desire, and transportation.

What is repressed gains power and force. That’s what characterizes the feminine imagination, I believe, among many other mysteries. There’s a fierceness and a power that’s hiding in plain sight, searching for ways to exist. To me that’s the glory of art- the audacious and gutsy release of all that pressure. The hugeness that bursts out is the “yes” that submerges the “no.” It’s an affirmation of the magnitude that has always existed inside.”

Carina Pearson is an abstract painter from Nashville, TN. She received her B.S. in Psychology from The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and her Masters of Arts in Counseling from Trevecca University. Throughout her six years of working as a therapist, she has incorporated the arts as a healing tool for patients battling trauma, addiction, and other mental health issues. Her paintings have been in exhibitions in Chattanooga and Nashville, TN, with a solo exhibition in Nashville at Sauvage gallery in May 2017.
